Respiratory Disease

Educational program for health care professionals

The Respiratory program was designed to enable a large and complex subject to be delivered in an easy to understand format for use by health care professionals – individually or in conjunction with their patients.

The program is separated into 4 sections:

Condition – covering areas such as How the lungs work (for exaple, the anatomy of the lungs and how oxygen is transferred to the bloodstream), Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Bronchiextasis, Obstructive sleep apnoes and Fibrosing alveolitis.

Investigations – explaining tests such as a Chest X-ray, Peak expiry flow test, Spirometry, Pulse oximetry, Blood gases, Brochoscopy, CT scan, Bronchial and lung biopsy.

Treatment – describing various treatments including Physiotherapy, Smoking cessation, Nebulisers, Using oxygen at home, Inhalers and Drug therapies (such as Preventing drugs, Relieving drugs, Corticosteroids and Bronchodilators).

Living With Respiratory Disease – obviously of great importance to the patient, showing topics such as Diet, Driving, Travelling abroad, Alcohol, Exercise, Pregnancy and more.

Other features:

  • Over 3 hours of interactive education using animated diagrams and pictures with subtitles and voice-over.
  • Online enabled – the program can be viewed over the internet or purchased as a standalone cd-rom (to be used directly from the cd or as an installation). The ability to install over a network or intranet is possible, subject to the purchased multiple-user licence.
  • Guidelines – the program incorporates the NSF, NICE and European Guidelines.
  • Leaflets – the user can read and print out pdf quality leaflets.
  • Toolkit – designed especially with the practice nurse in mind.
  • Audit Trail – provides the ability to audit the education that has been delivered. A record of which animations have been viewed can also be printed out.
  • Accessibilty and useability compliance – the interface can be controlled via the keyboard as well as the mouse. This is especially useful for people with impaired movement or users who prefer to navigate using keyboard shortcuts.
  • Web links – extarnal online resources and website links are provided in one convenient location.
  • Drawing tool: each animation can be paused – turning the cursor icon into a pen tool. This allows the health care professional the ability to add their own input to a particular part of the education by drawing on top of the on-screen diagrams and pictures.
