Multi-ed Medical supports the UN Resolution on Diabetes
09 June 2006
The time is right for a United Nations Resolution on diabetes
A United Nations Resolution on diabetes will focus world attention on the need to stop the growing diabetes epidemic through urgent action. The solutions require the attention of the global family of nations. To do nothing is no longer an option. Diabetes can only emerge from the shadows if the United Nations leads the global response and declares a Resolution on diabetes.
Diabetes is a global pandemic
Though it now affects more than 230 million people worldwide and is expected to affect 350 million by 2025, diabetes still lurks in the shadows. Diabetes is a growing epidemic that threatens to overwhelm healthcare services and undermine economies worldwide – especially in developing countries.
- Diabetes is a chronic disease marked by elevated blood glucose levels. In many countries in Asia, the Middle East, Oceania and the Caribbean, diabetes affects up to 20% of the adult population.
- Of the entire global adult population, more than five percent have diabetes.
- While diabetes kills as many people as HIV/AIDS, awareness of the disease is low and as a consequence the epidemic remains hidden.
An ominous rise in Type 2 diabetes will place a severe burden on medical services if left unchecked. Type 2 diabetes is due to the body’s resistance to insulin and is responsible for 90 to 95 percent of diabetes cases. Type 1 diabetes, which is characterized by a lack of production of insulin in the body, is also increasing alarmingly.
Indigenous populations worldwide are at risk of being wiped out because of their genetic risk for Type 2 diabetes. This combined with increased urbanization, high cases of obesity, sedentary lifestyles and stress is resulting in very high rates of diabetes in indigenous communities. With 50 percent of adults over the age of 35 in these groups worldwide having diabetes, the very existence of some of these communities is threatened. For many it is a race against time to turn the epidemic around.

Website relaunch
08 May 2006
Multi-ed is delighted to announce the launch of their new website which boasts a new online shop and overall redesign. The site is much more concise and integrates well with the newly developed online education.
The site uses standards compliant CSS to address issues of useability and accessibilty as well as making the site printer friendly.
The site’s design is based on a hybrid layout: with fixed-width side columns for navigation and a liquid center column that expands to fill the browser window regardless of the size of the user’s screen or their choice of window resizing. Elements within the page are elastic so that they will stretch accordingly without breaking if the user chooses to enlarge the default text size.

Redesigned educational programs
23 March 2006
The range of Multi-ed educational programs have been redesigned from the ground up. The new interface is now online enabled so users can login and view the rich content from any computer linked to the internet using their unique username and password. A cd-rom is no longer necessary but is still available upon request.
New features
- Online enabled: viewable on the internet through any browser, on any PC, laptops and Apple Macs.
- Can be installed on individual PCs or on a network of PCs or intranet.
- Small file sizes means fast download speed (less chance of a playback delay over the internet). Far less room is also taken up on the hard drive should you wish to install the program from a cd-rom.
- Accessible interface: keyboard shortcuts and arrow key navigation is available for convenience and people with impaired mobility.
- Larger buttons make it easier to navigate and makes the program ready to be used in touch-screen kiosks.
Other features
- Interactive education using animated diagrams and pictures with subtitles and voice-over.
- Guidelines – the programs for health care professionals incorporate the NSF, NICE and European Guidelines.
- Leaflets – the user can read and print out pdf quality leaflets.
- Toolkit – designed especially with the practice nurse in mind.
- Audit Trail – provides the ability to audit the education that has been delivered. A record of which animations have been viewed can also be printed out.
- Web links – extarnal online resources and website links are provided in one convenient location.
- Drawing tool in health care professionals’ programs: each animation can be paused – turning the cursor icon into a pen tool. This allows the health care professional the ability to add their own input to a particular part of the education by drawing on top of the on-screen diagrams and pictures.
